The Goldbergs and Schooled Wiki

Season 9 of the American television comedy series The Goldbergs was confirmed on May 14, 2021.[1] It is the 11th season in the The Goldbergs/Schooled franchise and premiered on September 22, 2021. It is the first season in the series to not feature George Segal as Pops, as Segal passed away on March 23, 2021. The season concluded on May 18, 2022.

  • This is the first season without Pops after the passing of his portrayer, George Segal on March 23, 2021.
  • This season premiered with a tribute to the 1989 film Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, as well as honoring the late George Segal and continuing the tradition of paying homage to a movie in the season opener. Per Wendi McLendon-Covey, "Every time we open a season, it's a movie tribute. We're doing one that takes us on the journey of where to spread Pops' ashes. It's hysterically funny, and you'll cry your eyes out. Sean Giambrone and I could barely get through filming."[7]
  • A.J. Michalka returned as Lainey Lewis in this season's "The Rose-Kissy Thing"; though it's currently unknown if this will be a recurring or guest role.[8]

  • On December 15, 2021, it was announced that Jeff Garlin, who portrays Murray Goldberg, would be departing the series after nine seasons due to multiple misconduct allegations and HR investigations. As Garlin had one more day of filming left for the season, it was reported that a body double was to be used and Garlin's face would be added via CGI in post-production "to wrap up his character's storyline".[9]
  • On December 15, 2021, it was announced that an additional four episodes had been ordered for season nine of The Goldbergs, bringing the season total up to 22 from the original 18.[10]
  • On March 25, 2022, it was announced that Wendi McLendon-Covey had closed a deal to return to The Goldbergs for a tenth season, seemingly indicating a renewal was coming, though one had yet to be confirmed at the time.[11] The tenth season was officially announced on April 19, 2022.[12]
