The Goldbergs and Schooled Wiki

Richard "Rick" Mellor (born December 5, 1947) is the Physical Education coach at William Penn Academy, a recurring character in The Goldbergs and a main character in Schooled. He is portrayed by Bryan Callen.

Occupation[]

In seasons 1-6 of The Goldbergs, Rick is the Physical Education coach at William Penn Academy. He takes his job very seriously, and seems to have a habit of giving nicknames to the kids he teaches (commonly referring to Adam Goldberg as "Goldfarb" and Erica as "Girl Goldberg").

In Season 6, he leaves William Penn to train wrestlers, leaving his job to his brother Nick. We learn in Schooled that he eventually returned.

In the Season 7 episode Pickleball, Barry and Adam track down Rick to get him to teach Adam the sport of pickleball. In order for Adam to get a sport on his transcripts to support him getting into film school. However, he has since quit coaching since his last appearance. Nick helps Barry and Adam convince Rick to coach them by reminding Rick he was a better pickleball player than him. Rick unsuccessfully coaches Adam to play pickleball with the help of Barry, with him being beaten instantly at the high school. Adam later meets Rick to tell him he will always be his coach and that he's the best. Rick gifts him a letterman jacket and they hug, convincing Rick to get back into coaching.

Personal Life[]

Not a lot is known about Rick's life outside of school. He previously dated Susan Cinoman, the drama teacher at William Penn, but the relationship ended seven years prior to the events of "I'll Be There For You", despite the fact that Rick believed they were simply "on a break". In Schooled, he is currently in a relationship with a woman named Julie.

Trivia[]

  • Rick played pickleball in high school and was better than his brother Nick, who was better at football.
