The Dirty Dancing Dance is the seventeenth episode of the third season of The Goldbergs and the sixty-fourth episode overall. It aired on March 2, 2016.

Overview[]

Beverly helps Erica plan a Dirty Dancing themed dance at school, only to turn on Erica when she realizes it may be inappropriate. Meanwhile, Murray tries to learn dancing with Adam with little luck.

Full Recap[]

Beverly and Erica are watching Dirty Dancing. Both wish they could live the movie, and Erica comes up with an idea to make Dirty Dancing the theme of the next school dance. Unfortunately, Principal Ball completely shuts the idea down, and informs her that the theme is going to be a "Soda Pop Hop" in the style of the 1950s.

Beverly is outraged and announces her intentions to go to the school to give Principal Ball a piece of her mind, but Erica tells Beverly she'll tell off Principal Ball instead. After Erica demands Principal Ball let them have the Dirty Dancing Dance and Beverly glares at Principal Ball, he gives in.

Later on, Erica comes home, excitedly talking about the dance with Lainey. Beverly realizes just how dirty the dance is going to be and begins to have second thoughts, and ends up demanding that Principal Ball cancel it. Erica finds out what her mother did and gets angry at her.

Barry does not want a Dirty Dancing theme -- he wants a Footloose theme, but he tells Erica to fight the power with dance and she says that's exactly what she's gonna do. Geoff, in love with Erica and willing to do whatever it takes to impress her, vows to be her Patrick Swayze.

Erica, Lainey, Barry and the JTP hatch a plan to make the dance Dirty Dancing: they crash the dance and Erica and Geoff attempt to dance the final number from the movie, only to fail, landing Erica in trouble.

Beverly then realizes she was being controlling (not unlike Baby's father in the film) and she encourages Erica to go after what she wants.

Erica and Geoff try the dance again and share a moment. Everyone ends up having fun after all, dancing to (I've Had) The Time Of My Life.

Meanwhile, all Beverly wants is for Murray to dance with her, but Murray refuses because he doesn't like to dance. After a talk with Pops, Murray enlists Adam to help him learn how to dance.

Adam suggests Murray learn to dance like they do in Dirty Dancing, but this proves to be an epic fail.

Murray attempts to dance while filming himself with Adam's video camera but he turns out to be a bad dancer.

In the end, to make Beverly happy, he dances with her at The Dirty Dancing Dance.

Trivia[]

  • When Adam is showing Murray Dirty Dancing, he references the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off. He refers to Jennifer Grey as 'Ferris Bueller's lame-ass sister'. Actress Jennifer Grey portrayed Francis 'Baby' Houseman in Dirty Dancing and also portrayed Ferris Bueller's sister Jeanie Bueller. Around the time Dirty Dancing was filmed, Jennifer Grey was dating her onscreen brother, Matthew Broderick, and the two were about to embark on a publicity tour to promote the film when they were involved in a head-on collision in their rental car in Ireland, in which a mother and daughter died, in August 1987 shortly before the movie was released. Broderick was later convicted of careless driving and fined $175. Dirty Dancing was released a few weeks after the accident, catapulting Grey to fame, but she has said that her grief and survivor's guilt over the crash prevented her from enjoying the film's success, and led her to withdraw from acting for some time.
  • Barry makes multiple references to Kevin Bacon in Footloose and gets the words to the song Footloose by Kenny Loggins wrong, after which Lainey tells him, "Sweetie, I keep telling you: the song's not about ice cream."
  • Beverly tells Principal Ball that he may want to Orbach the kids but she doesn't. Beverly is referring to legendary Law & Order actor Jerry Orbach, who plays Baby's controlling father Dr. Jake Houseman, who forbids Baby from seeing Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze) after he jumps to the conclusion that Johnny got his best friend and dance partner Penny Johnson (Cynthia Rhodes) pregnant.
  • Erica and Geoff's outfits in the "Time Of My Life" scene at the dance are exact replicas of Jennifer Grey's dress and Patrick Swayze's outfit in Dirty Dancing.
